About Us
Did you know that nestled in the heart of Suffolk's historic district is a drycleaner with a legcy of excellence? Through the years, many businesses have lost experienced, trained people to time and technology, but Master Cleaners is a fourth generation dry cleaner that is still going strong.
Since the 1930's, the Latta family has been serving the community's drycleaning, laundering, and alteration needs. Master Cleaners came into the Latta's possession in the 1980's, and has continued their family's legacy of excellence. After serving in World War II, Jim Latta, a second-generation drycleaner, received his formal traiing from the renowned "National Institute of Cleaning and Dyeing" back in 1950. In order to graduate, he had to have a working knowledge of fabrics and garment construction, how dyes were made, and how to dye - in short, he became a true craftsman.
It is upon this heritage that Ricki was able to build. He grew up in the drycleaning industry, just like his father Jim. He helped his dad install equipment and learned first hand the art and craft of drycleaning. After high school, Ricki went to work at Newport News Shipbuilding where he built upon what his father had taught him about mechanics and learned many different skills which would later help him when he returned to the drycleaning industry.
In 1988, Ricki left the shipyard and came to work with his father at Master Cleaners. He took over role of CEO, and has worked with and trained what we believe to be some of the best employees in the drycleaning industry. His insistance on quality and integrity, combined with his knowledge of drycleaning, management, and mechanics have transformed Master Cleaners into what it is today - a legacy of excellence.
Many cleaners are first-generation people who bought into the drycleaning industry looking for an investment. Most do not last long because it is very hard, hot work. The Lattas have been around long enough to remember when many of today's fabrics were first introduced to the market, giving them extensive knowledge about how to serve their customers' needs. Master Cleaners has been looking after generations of people from births to proms, weddings to funerals. They firmly believe in taking care of their customers clothing needs.
